ETUDE HOUSE’s Play 101 Sticks for Contouring

The Play 101 stick is a collaboration with Pony x Etude House. It received a huge popularity in Hong Kong even after the Big Cover Cushion series came out. There were always a few sticks that were always sold out because the minute they got restocked, people would buy them right away. Find out which ones I purchased and how well they work for contouring below!

Evaluation

Play 101 Stick – #11 Shading: 4/5

Play 101 Contour Duo Stick – #01: 4.5/5

Price

14.95 USD (I purchased mine in HK for $180HKD, if I remember correctly)

Description

A multi-function color stick for eyes, cheeks and lips that creates color impacts with smooth and sheer finish

Other shades: 15 shades and 2 contour duo sticks

I only purchased #11 shade and the #01 contour duo stick, since I wasn’t looking for a blush/foundation&concealer. When I purchased my products there was only 1 contour duo stick and 8 shades, but recently they added a couple more contouring and blush to the line (#12, #13, #15, #16, #18, #19, #20) and a new contouring stick with a pinker undertone for the highlighting shade and a matte dark brown for the contour.

Play 101 Stick – #11 Shading
This product has a light brown shade that is perfect for those with paler skin to use as a contour. Aside from being light brown, this shade also carries an orange undertone to it, which gives it that softer brown colour.

tube

The Play 101 Stick comes in a short tube, where you twist the bottom (where it indicates the colour of the product) to get more product. It’s easy to hold in your hands, which makes it easy to apply.

Swatch
My skin is rather dark compared to the typical Korean/Asian pale skin so it’s hard to see a huge difference after the product is blended. However, I do think at the same time it’s a good thing because it’s a more natural contouring shade ; u ;

Pros: sheer, easy to apply (it just slides on!), very pigmented, blends easily with finger, water-resistant, long-lasting, smooth finish

Cons: oily, easily rubbed off with your fingers if you don’t set it

I personally felt like this product was a little heavy on my face after I applied it, it felt quite oily to me. However, it’s probably because when my skin is too dry, it secretes oil. I should’ve probably set it with powder as well. All in all, I love the colours that they have for blushes, but I will probably be looking for another product to use for contour since it doesn’t really match my skin tone that well!

Play 101 Contour Duo Stick – #01 Highlighter + Shading
This product has two shades, for the same price as the Play 101 Stick – so it’s like a 2-for-1.

forgot-to-add

The colour of the shading here is  matte dark brown, and the highlighter is a sheer white. Compared to the Play 101 Stick #11 – shading, the shading in the Contour Duo stick is much much darker.

Swatch
I swatched it on the untanned side of my arm this time, so it is easier to see the difference between the two shading colours.

I like how this product comes with two colours, it’s really good for those who are just starting to learn how to contour – like me! But because it’s set for lighter skin tones, I do think this highlighter colour is a teeny bit toooo light for my skin (maybe?).

compared-blending

Pros: 2-for-1 (so it’s cheaper than the play 101 stick), great for learning how to contour, easy to apply (it just slides on!), very pigmented, blends easily with finger, water-resistant, long-lasting, highlighter is sheer, shading is matte, smooth finish

Cons: oily, easily rubbed off with your fingers if you don’t set it

Contour time!
Woohoo! I tried to contour with this product the best that I could, obviously I look kind of silly I think? I love how Etude House comes up with super cute products hehe.

before-n-after

Make up done in Before photo: BB Cream, eyebrows and light eyeshadow

I did not put anything else after I finished contouring my face with the Play 101 Sticks. I found it a bit hard to see a difference from the #11 – shading, but my nose looks slightly higher compared to before and my face looks a lot warmer (and shinier ; u ;). The highlighter is a bit white on my face though, but hey! at least it worked and the features of my face look  more defined.

In Summary

I love how easy it is to apply, and how you can learn how to contour from using these products. I’m not sure if it matches well with my skin tone (in-person it didn’t) but on pictures it doesn’t look as bad as I thought it did. I’m really happy with this product aside from it’s oilyness (but that is definitely a smooth finish!).

PS. I found them water resistant, because I tried to wash my hand off with water after applying them and it didn’t work.. I had to use an oil cleanser/ makeup remover!
